About CBM

A Cape Town family business, now in its third generation

CBM Waterproofing started in 1993 and has stayed a family business ever since. Andrew Russell runs it today, from the specifications to the contracts to the quality on site, so the person who quotes your job is the person who sees it through.

We work on homes and body corporates right across the Cape Peninsula. The promise is simple: we tell you what the problem actually is, we use the right system for it, and we do the work ourselves rather than hand it to a subcontractor.

Root cause first

We find what is actually causing the problem before we quote.

RestorationThe Brittany residential complex in Sea Point after a full exterior restoration and repaint

The Brittany, Sea Point

Full exterior restoration of this Sea Point complex, from the roofs down to the repaint.

View project

A full exterior restoration of this Sea Point complex on High Level Road. We stripped the failed waterproofing back to the slab, laid a geotextile membrane and a five-coat acrylic system across the roofs and balconies, and sealed the parapets. The facade was cleaned, all cracks and spalled concrete repaired, then primed and repainted.

WaterproofingWaterproofing a parking deck in Camps Bay

Camps Bay, parking deck waterproofing

A leaking parking deck stripped to the slab and rebuilt with a new waterproofing system.

View project

This exposed parking deck was leaking into the space below through failed movement joints and worn waterproofing. We broke it out down to the structural slab, chased out and resealed the joints with backer rod and polyurethane, then primed the slab and laid a self-adhesive bitumen membrane across the deck. We detailed the upstands, columns, and drain outlets, cast a protection screed, and reinstated the paving.

RenovationNew hardwood balcony deck and waterproofing on a renovated property in Hout Bay

Hout Bay, full property renovation

Balcony waterproofing, a new hardwood deck, and a full interior refit.

View project

A full renovation of this Hout Bay property, with the balcony rebuilt from the substrate up. We stripped the old tiles and the rotten deck back to the concrete, rescreeded the balcony, and laid a self-adhesive bitumen system with a cementitious waterproofing coat over the top. Three sliding doors were replaced with custom units and sealed, and a new grappa hardwood deck was fitted across the full balcony and balustrades. Inside, the guest bathroom was remodelled and the floors throughout were lifted and relaid on a self-levelling screed.

Common questions

Things people ask us first

A properly installed system lasts roughly 10 to 15 years, depending on the product and how exposed the surface is to sun and wind. We tell you the expected lifespan of the exact system we quote before any work starts.
We work across Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, including Camps Bay, Sea Point, Rondebosch, Constantia, and Hout Bay. If you are nearby and not sure, give us a call and we will tell you straight.
We aim to get out within two to three working days for a site assessment. When water is actively coming in, we do our best to get there the same or next day.
It depends on the surface. We use torch-on bitumen, self-adhesive membranes, acrylic tissue systems, cementitious coatings, and elastomeric paints, and we pick the one that suits the job rather than the one we have left over.
